Anon users

What does your wiki do about anon users? Do you have them as a large part of your editing family, or do you block them from your wiki to avoid potential vandalism? Have you found anons to be beneficial or detrimental to your wiki? Discuss bellow.

Personally, on Doctor Who Answers, most of our editors are regular IP users. In fact, the user with the IP address which usually starts with 89 is probably one of the site's best editors. Because most IP addresses don't change too much, many of our IPs act sort of pseudo registered, with their identity being known via the first few numbers of their IP. These IP editors have definitely been an addition to the site. DWA would be dead without them.

Anons.. They ask questions, they vandal, they get blocked...

And, on a rare case, answer question!

Really? We've got quite a dedicated set of IP users who do most of the answering over at DWA. They answer, they categorise, they partake in discussions in the forums... sure, there are occasionally vandals, but I've found for the most part that IP users want to help out as much as registereds; they just don't want to make an account for one reason or another.

Yup, if you check anytime during the day on Wikianswers, you will not see anons doing that stuff. Only vandals, blocks, tons of deleted pages.

Most of the anon users just ask the same questions that have already been asked. They usually aren't beneficial for us at SWAnswers.

Most of the anons on Finance Answers ask questions. Only a handful give answers to questions, and for some reason Finance Answers doesn't receive much users who vandal.

Interesting.

Most of the anons at Transformers Answers ask questions. Very few of them answer questions. I've never seen an anon give a constructive answer to any of these questions that are asked, and one of the answers to one of the questions were spammed with the letter o (which probably was vandalism or just an non-constructive answer). For some reason though, I've seen barely any vandalism on that answers wiki, even though an admin hasn't edited it in over 3 years. Transformers Answers doesn't receive much vandals for some kind of strange reason.

We have a few regular anons which we've come to know despite their lack of accounts. Now and again there's an anonymous user who'll vandalise/spam but it gets taken care of fairly quickly. The only time we've had recurring problems is due to an anonymous user who lived next door to one of the regular editors and shared his IP, so we couldn't ban the anon because it would mean the other editor would be banned as a result.

Otherwise I rather like the anonymous community at Final Fantasy Answers. All very civil and well-meaning, believe it or not.
